Oprah Joins Fight to End Hunger

Oprah was fresh off a Parisian vacay, when THE media mogul spread some Black girl magic in Cincinnati.

Oprah shocked volunteers at Freestore Foodbank on Sept. 11th when she came suited and booted to help pack 2,000 meals for school kids in the community.

Oprah was one of 100 volunteers to support Kroger grocery store’s Kroger Zero Hunger, Zero Waste anniversary that aims to end hunger and food waste by 2025.
“It’s an honor to support this initiative in the local Cincinnati community and beyond,” said Winfrey. “I am committed to the fight against hunger because I’ve seen the impact it has on people. That’s why I wanted to be here today to help pack food for Cincinnati children facing hunger. The work Kroger is doing is special and meaningful.”

The cherry on top of the event was…no, Gayle didn’t come. Next time, guys.

Oprah’s food line O, That’s Good! teamed up with Kroger to donate one million meals to Feeding America to feed families around the country.

Oprah stands undefeated as the giving God. Fight me on this.

Big Serving of Goodness! Woman Feeds 30,000 Using Coupons

I’ve cut a coupon or two during my pig tail days (in my mama’s house you didn’t have a choice) but never enough to land on a game show.

Or boast about feeding 30,000 strangers as a result of clipping skills. Lauren Puryear can.

The New Jersey native set an epic  birthday wish: to feed 30,000 people for her big 3-0 in September. She aalready surpassed it.

Don’t worry she’s not superhuman. But does have a superpower: an  obsession with extreme couponing.

“After I couponed for 50 jars of Ragu sauce and 100 boxes of Barilla pasta all for free, I knew I was going to make a difference in the world,” she told Scary Mommy.

Lauren’s “small scale” compassion via couponing project kicked into high gear when delivering 5,000 meals to people in New Jersey, Washington D.C. and Baltimore. Giving the Northern VA dweller the idea to go even bigger. Hence, the B-day goal.

Lauren launched the org For Love of Others, which pools volunteers in the East to provide homeless with food and necessities, like uncooked meals for family dinner and kids’ bagged lunch.

Setting a great example for her six-year-old son, who volunteers with her.

“He’s really grown into such a little humanitarian,” she said. “I hope he’ll continue to help others throughout his life however he sees fit. He also also learned how to coupon, which he loves.”

Lauren already has sights set on helping even more people with new Push Past Poverty initiative–after discovering the people she feeds are at or below the poverty line–that educates people on rising above poverty.

As Puryear’s humanitarian work expands, so do her goals. “I will keep on feeding until [my 30th birthday] and see what number I can get up to,” she said. “Maybe 300,000!”

IYB Woman Crush Wednesday | Ciara’s Feeding America

Fresh off her bae-cation R&B chanteuse Ciara brings her good vibes to dinner tables around the country.

RELATED: Viola Davis Joins Safeway Foundation’s Mission to End Child Hunger

The “I Bet” singer partnered with lifestyle brand Unilever to combat an overlooked but worthy cause–child hunger. A huge problem affecting 15 million kids every single day. To help change the tide, Ciara took to Instagram using the hashtag #ShareAMeal with a photo of an empty plate. And encouraged her 8.6 million followers to do the same. Because with each new upload or retweet Unilever will donate a free meal to Feeding America.

And with the help of the C Squad–including Lala Anthony and Stephen Curry’s wife Ayesha Curry–Unilever met their goal of a million meals for Feeding America. All in one week. I don’t think Mother Theresa could’ve even pulled that one off.

Did you know that 1 out of 5 kids live in homes without food? And 21 million kids depend on school lunches for daily nourishment? Pretty grim statistics coming from a wealthy country like America. It’s one thing to see it happening,  (3 out of 5 elementary teachers notice hungry students.) quite another to live it. Like Oscar nominated actress Viola Davis, who reveals what going hungry forced her to do.

Now The Help actress is using her celebrity to change the script on childhood hunger. Viola is the ambassador of The Safeway Foundation’s Hunger Is charitable effort. The goal is to raise awareness for hunger prevention and donations to programs efforts to end childhood hunger (ex. No Kid Hungry, Feeding America and Food Research and Action Center). Safeway shoppers in the Bay area can donate at their local store or by clicking here. And if time is all you can afford, click here to volunteer at Hunger Is event in your area.

Let’s all do something to fix this problem, there is no reason babies should be going hungry. Like Tupac spits, “It’s funny they got money for wars/but can’t feed the poor..”

Happy Good Friday, y’all.
