Shakira Made Surprise Visit to Earthquake Damaged Colombia and Committed $1.25 to Rebuild Schools

Shakira made a surprise visit to her hometown of Colombia on Monday to tour earthquake ravaged areas.

According to Billboard, Shakira landed in Quibdo, the capital of Choco, a remote, poor city that sadly lost close to 200 schools to the 7.4 earthquake that struck the Latin country on Aug. 13th.

Shakira toured damaged classrooms, met up with students and teachers and announced a $1.25 million commitment to assist in rebuilding schools.

“What worries me the most is that schools are not rebuilt once this emergency is over,” she told journalists. “Every day that children don’t go to school is a day they miss out on their future.”

The funds will be sourced through Shakira’s Fundación Pies Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation) that has operated two schools in the area for more than a decade, reports Billboard.

“It’s a place I love, a place where I’ve seen our students grow in our classrooms,” she said. “I really want to see it rebuild again.”

We know Shakira’s hips and lips don’t lie.
