Jalen Hurts Surprises Philly Students with New Kids Book

Jalen Hurts at launching of kids book.

Our most valuable Philly player (fight me), Jalen Hurts put a smile on 10 first graders’ faces with a big surprise.

The Eagles QB pulled up to Hair Connections on Wednesday, not for a shape up, but to give some lucky 6 and 7 year-olds a low key book reading they didn’t see coming.

The KIPP Philadelphia Elementary Academy students thought they were going on field trip.

And were!

Jalen with new book club friends

An unforgettable field trip with a Super bowl champ turned author with new kids book “Better Than a Touchdown.”

Jalen read to the kids, took selfies and got their very own copy of his book.

“My inspiration behind this book came from just where my mind was when I was a kid,” Hurts told Philadelphia Eagles website. “It’s just an act of me paying it forward because I knew what truly inspired me when I was younger, so it allowed me to keep pressing forward, keep going, and I just wanted to pay it back.

“Better Than a Touchdown” is about a young Jalen who gets cut from his football team and leaning on family and friends to learn about perseverance and community.

The book is in partnership with Jalen Hurts Foundation and Barbershop Books, an org that aims to inspire “Black boys to read through community-based programming and content.”

If excitement was a picture

To meet that need they are loading 30 Philly barbershops with books to boost literacy and reach 3,500 boys a month, reports Philadelphia Eagles website.
