How Drake, TI and Reginae Carter Made Us Ugly Cry

Allergies. Yup, that’s why my eyes are glistening. Damn pollen.

Okay, fine. You caught me. It’s not flora triggering my tear ducts–Drake fulfilling a fan’s wish to meet him is definitely doing the trick.

How could it not?

The jury’s still out on Kiki’s affections for him, but Sofia Sanchez is definitely feeling Drake after the “God’s Plan” rapper surprised the 11-year-old heart condition patient with a hospital visit on Monday.

Drake dropped by Lurie children’s hospital in Chi-Town, a week after Sofia–who is battling cardiomyopathy and seeking a heart transplant–took the “In Your Feelings” challenge, asking him to visit.

This is by far the cutest plug ever with Sofia rocking Scorpion cap. For those living under a rock it’s the title of Drake’s latest album.

Long live the king of the South, especially if he continues to be this generous.

Rapper TI donated a year’s worth of lunch money to University High School sophomore Danielle Aiken, after learning on Twitter the Florida teen was denied lunch for being 15 cents short.

Like, really? The lunch lady aka Nazi couldn’t let the girl slide this once.

Thankfully TI took to Twitter to not only rant about it, but be the solution.

Danielle confirmed receiving TI’s blessing to WKMG. And revealed he wasn’t the only one offering to pay her lunch tab.

Prompting her to launch a GoFundMe account for students struggling to pay for school lunch.

Great way to pay it forward, sis.

Just like our girl, Reginae Carter and boo YFN Lucci is doing for Atlanta kiddies.

The power couple hosted a Back to School Field Day event in Atlanta’s Grant Park Recreation Center where they handed out backpacks full of school supplies.

And of course played games. Reginae and family took part in potato sack races, three legged races. In addition to face painting and bracelet making. To top it off there were food and ice cream trucks.

Sounds like a fun-filled day.

May your weekend be in the same vein.

Kevin Hart, Common and Chris Paul Give Epic Back- to-School Gifts

These fellas give back game is on fleek!

September is right around the corner, and they’re already helping secure the bag for students to pay that too damn high college bill.

How?

Kevin Hart set up a $600,000 scholarship fund for college kids through his newly unveiled Help From The Hart Charity. He joined forces with Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP) and United Negro College Fund to surprise 18 attending HBCUs.

Kevin Hart flew to LA to surprise the award recipients in person on Tuesday.

The Jumanji star and KIPP each donated $300,000 each to the Fund. Making the path a lot smoother for students heading to Tuskegee University, Morehouse College, Xavier University, Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University.

Black excellence at it’s finest.

How Chris Paul Isn’t Shutting Up and Dribbling

Chris Paul made history this week by donating $2.5 million to his alma mater Wake Forest University on Tuesday.

The All Star baller’s hefty check (the biggest donor gift from alumna in the school’s history) will go towards the basketball program—to “transform the men’s and women’s basketball clubhouses with expanded and enhanced locker rooms, nutrition resources and treatment areas.”

So naturally, the men’s locker will be named in Chris’ honor.

The former Demon Deacons player was inspired to do the locker room revamp because of the importance of teamwork.

The locker room transportation project inspired me, because that’s where players build relationships and create a unifying camaraderie that is the foundation of success on the court.

The nine time NBA All Star and North Carolina native would know.

Common and his Mother Donating Money for Students and Teachers to Get School Supplies

Finally, Common and his mother teamed up with Burlington Stores and non profit org Adopt-a-Classroom, for the second year in a row, to get much needed school supplies to teachers and students.

The duo kicked off the campaign by donating $10,000 to the org and visiting a school in NYC on Monday.

Common writes on Instagram he was inspired to make the donation because teachers make a huge impact, like his mother who taught in his native Chicago.

My mother has been in the Chicago school system for, more than 35 years, and I am honored to do my part to help teachers get the materials they need to help their students succeed

Okay, class dismissed and have a great weekend.

Colin Kaepernick Completes Million Dollar Donation Challenge

Here’s how you roll into Black History month, fam.

Colin ‘our black prince’ Kaepernick has hit the one milly mark on his pledge to donate to underserved communities around the country.

View this post on Instagram

When I started my #MillionDollarPledge and committed to donate $1,000,000 towards various programs – my original intent was to help the organizations on the ground doing much needed work within our communities.  The goal was to help those helping others. To touch those impacting lives in a real way and to make sure that those in need benefited from the dollars donated.  While on the journey, what I realized was the person that benefited the most from this pledge was myself. I've learned about and had the privilege to work with so many quality organizations fighting for Social Justice daily. I've met so many people that work with so many great non-profits that do amazing work. I've been humbled by the appreciation from places like Assata’s Daughters, United We Dream, and Standing Rock to name just a few of where my contributions from my pledge were able to help. The #MillionDollarPledge was never for me, or about me – It has, and always will continue to be for, and about the people. Perhaps what I've learned most is that we can all enact change. Not everyone has to donate monetarily. Some organizations need volunteers and time just as much as they need a donation. Head over to Kaepernick7.com to learn more about all the programs that have been a part of my #10for10 as well as my #MillionDollarPledge. While there, you can see where all the donations went as well as learn more about all these amazing organizations and how you can help contribute. We have work to do, and the only way to get it done is if we all work together.

Before getting across the finish line, he challenged famous pals to donate $10K to an org of their choice and he’ll match it. Dubbing it the 10 for 10 challenge.

Usher heed the call Wednesday and donated $10,000 to Helping Oppressed Mothers Endure Inc., a Georgia-based non-profit that helps single and divorced mom’s adapt to a new life.

I am happy to announce that I have completed my #MillionDollarPledge. For this final #10for10 joining me is, multiple Grammy Award winner, singer, songwriter and hitmaker…My brother @usher! He is donating $10k to match my $10k for $20k going towards H.O.M.E from Lithonia, Georgia. H.O.M.E. stands for Helping Oppressed Mothers Endure and they provide furniture to single mothers and their mission is to extend love to the home; restore hope in the heart, and offer help through healing hands to single mothers facing hardship. It has been an honor for me to serve the people with my #MillionDollarPledge. The thanks and gratitude from each organization has been immense. Being able to learn and see how each organization used the donations was a key part of the Pledge. I wanted to make sure that every dollar was going towards making real change in our communities. Thank you to everyone who has supported me, matched me and my pledge and most importantly the people. I know that we still have a lot of work to do, however, by getting everyone involved, I truly believe that we can all achieve and move mountains towards our goals for Social Justice. Please head over to Kaepernick7.com for a complete list of my $1,000,000 if donations as well as others like my brother, @usher who have matched with their generous donations as well.

Rapper Meek Mill, who is currently incarcerated, donated $10K to Youth Services, Inc, a Philly based charity that supports at risk youth.

Jesse Williams, Steph Curry and Nick Cannon also took part in the #10for10 challenge.

Colin started the one million pledge after opting out of his contract with San Francisco 49ers.

And vows to keep the good works going even without the NFL behind him.

With or without the NFL’s platform, I will continue to work for the people,” he said while picking up the 2017 Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award in December, “because my platform is the people.”

The Black Panther Movie is a Must See for Kids and This New Yorker is Footing the Bill

To say that Marvel’s “Black Panther” movie is highly anticipated is like saying Oprah kinda killed it at the Golden Globes.

Y’all know this movie is everything.

So it should come as no surprise that everyone should be able to see this Black superhero on the big screen, especially our impressionable kids.

Fredrick Joseph is making it possible.

The New Yorker started a Go Fund Me campaign to raise enough money for 300 kids from Boys & Girls Club of Harlem to see Black Panther.

Frederick says the movie is a “rare opportunity for young students (primarily of color) to see a black major cinematic and comic book character come to life.”

The marketing consultant told the TODAY show the movie is more than entertainment.

It’s my opinion that inclusion and representation really are fuel for children to dream — not just to dream, but to dream big. It’s important that young people see themselves in roles they couldn’t even imagine… for a little girl to see herself as Wonder Woman, or for a young child of color to see himself as the leader of Wakanda.

Frederick, 28, does not have kids but wants to give back to reinforce that melanin magnificence in young people.

“I knew I wanted to do something so that I can give that opportunity for representation to an underrepresented group.”

Frederick’s Go Fund Me requested $10K and received $39,641. Well done!

But it’s far from over. Frederick is going national–challenging others to follow his lead by using Go Fund Me to raise money for the kids in their community to see the movie.

SportsCenter anchor Jemele Hill showed Frederick love on his important mission.

TGIF! Colin Kaepernick Continues Giving Tour |Obama Donates $2M to Chi-Town Jobs Program

Happy Cinco De Mayo, Blinkers!

It couldn’t come at a better time…because it’s feel good Friday, y’all.

So grab that Corona with lime–dont forget the tacos–settle in and let’s recap some of the good things that went down this week.

Starting with our favorite quarterback Colin Kaepernick, sans a team. (Insert rant: will somebody pick this dude up already?)

Colin’s giving tour landed in front of the New York State Parole Board on Sunday, where the former 49er handed out custom suits to recently released prisoners looking for jobs.

Colin’s doing the damn thing when it comes to helping out in the community. Keep up the goodworks, CK.

Now for some Obama news that doesn’t involve “health” or “care” ’cause ain’t nothing feel good about that ish.

Anyway, Barack and Michelle Obama announced making a $2 million donation to create 800 summer jobs in Chicago on Wednesday.

“One of the things that we’ll be starting this year is Michelle and I are personally going to donate $2 million to our summer jobs programs here in the community,” he said at the South Shore Cultural Center. “[It’s] so that right away young people can get to work and we can start providing opportunities to all of them.”

So take that, all you salty Democrats (**cough Bernie Sanders cough**) who chastised Obama for filling his pockets with Wall Street dollars. A cash grab former presidents have done for decades, mind you. At least Obama is doing it to help out his adopted city. To prevent more violence from coming out of Chiraq.

One Summer Chicago will be hosting summer jobs for the teens.

Cheers to more people like Obama.

Best Week Ever! Beyonce Is Giving Us ‘Lemonade’ Scholarships | Barack Obama Comes Home

Barack.Obama.Is.Back. Now if that wasn’t enough to make your week a little better. Hell, it’s Barry, a lot better than nothing else will.

Nope I’m lying. Cause hold up! King Bey is giving us some more ‘Lemonade’ news.

tumblr_llo3upteWS1qkomroo1_500

Beyonce announced Formation college scholarships–in honor of the one-year anniversary of ‘Lemonade’ album release–to young women “who are unafraid to think outside the box and are bold, creative, conscious and confident.”

The Formation scholars are incoming, current or graduate students in the 2017/2018 academic year. They will major in creative arts, music, literature or African-American studies.

These future Nikki Giovanni’s and Lauryn Hills will be roaming the halls of either Berklee College of Music, Howard University, Parsons School of Design or Spelman College–schools that are participants in the Formation scholarship. Check out the schools’ websites for deadline.

Awww, Beyonce. No one loves us like you do.

Now, back to Barack. This is not a drill folks. No drive-by coffee run in Midtown Manhattan. Or a lunch date with Bono. This is Barack’s official comeback to his hometown of Chi-Town.

The official jump off was on Monday when he held a town hall meeting with youth leaders at the University of Chicago  Where he reflected on his presidency.

He had me at:

Check out the full Q&A below.

Barack followed that up with a more formal speech at a Chicago club on Wednesday.

Barack is officially back, guys. And it’ll cost ya $400 G’ s to get him.

44 ain’t cheap, y’all.

Feel Good Friday Roundup

Beyonce’s Lemonade album drop wasn’t the only good news this week. Sorry Beyhive. There was a lot of reasons to slap on that Kool-Aide smile, starting with FLOTUS Michelle Obama’s fencing lesson from Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad in Times Square Wednesday. To kick-off coverage of the Olympics this summer and promote her Let’s Move Campaign!

Gotta love a woman that kills two birds with one stone.

carmelohospital

Knicks baller Carmelo Anthony and wife LaLa paid a visit to their No. 1 fan, Anthony Skipper at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Florida earlier this week. Melo and La have been visiting Anthony, who suffers from a brain disorder, frequently since learning he’s a big Knicks fan. So they couldn’t miss being by his side during one of his major surgeries.

Awww who says you shouldn’t meet your heroes.

marcusscribner

Black-ish star Marcus Scribner was picked to be the first ever Youth Advocate Ambassador for The Sandals Foundation. Marcus visited Jamaica recently where he lent a hand for Earth Day.

darrius

Finally, my favorite feel good story of the week is about perseverance and a piano. Ohio teen Darrius Simmons was born with just four fingers, but it didn’t stop him from teaching himself how to play the piano. At 10.

Recently he began posting videos of him tickling the ivories and got noticed by pianist Yiruma, who was scheduled to play Carnegie Hall on April 22nd. He invited Darrius to join him, reports NBC New York. Not only did 15-year-old Darrius accompany Yiruma he brought Carnegie Hall to their feet.

Check the video below for a small sampling of Darrius’ piano skills.

Hope all this goodness is contagious.
