Tyler Perry is Secret Santa That Pays Off $430,000 Layaway Items at ATL Walmart

Tyler Perry retired the Madea frock to slip on big red suit.

‘Cause when you’re footing the bill for $430,000 worth of layaway items at Walmart, you are forevermore known as Black Claus.

Last week, TP paid for all the layaway items (totaling $435,635) in two ATL Walmart stores. The only price the lucky shoppers had to pay was a penny to get their items.

Tyler Perry tried to keep his good deed under wraps, but secret got out and he took to Twitter.

“Merry Christmas to everybody!” Perry says on Twitter outing himself as the Good Samaritan. “I know it’s a hard time, a lot of people are struggling, and I’m just really, really grateful to be able to be in a position like this.”

Thanks to TP, folks have one less holiday bill to pay. Won’t he do it!!

Ka-Ching! Tyler Perry’s (Pricey, but) Good Deed

Tyler Perry is rich, guys. How rich is he? He dropped $150,000 on a piano. No, the keys aren’t made of gold, but the “Steinway B grand” has felt the fingertips of musical royalty–Duke Ellington, Count Basie–and belonged to one: Nat King Cole.

It’s not just bragging rights the “Gone Girl” star bought the piano. That big check will benefit Nat King Cole Generation Hope that supports music education in schools.

T.P. is the real rich bitch.

Tyler Perry Donates $45K to Atlanta Teen Homeless Shelter

perryphilanthropyMega producer (and to Spike Lee’s chagrin, creator of the wise cracking, law breaking grandmom Madea) Tyler Perry shows he loves the children by donating $45,000 to an Atlanta teen shelter at risk of closing.

The “If Loving You is Wrong” producer spent his 45th b-day making teens and their families dreams come true by keeping the Young People Matter shelter’s doors open to the 6,000 they service, until the end of the year.

The shelter’s $580,000 grant that lasted three years will expire at the end of this month.

Perry stopped by the shelter last week to talk with the kids at the facility that boasts of being the only “24-hour bed space to both males and females under 18” in Atlanta. And the shelter only has five beds!?!

According to Access Atlanta, Perry’s PR reps confirmed the $45,000 donation was meant to coincide with his 45th year on Earth. You gotta love the symmetry of his philanthropy.

The president of the board on Young People Matter, Andrew Bostic, hopes others will follow in the famous filmmaker’s footsteps in supporting their shelter’s mission.

Considering how open Perry is in discussing his past life of homelessness (he once quipped to Essence, “Can you imagine a 6-foot-five man sleeping in a Geo Metro?) it’s inspiring he reached back to help others in the same dilemma.

Nas Raises Money for Homeless Single Father in Washington D.C.

I think I speak for everyone when I write there isn’t a day that goes by, where I’m reading the morning paper and I hear a heartbreaking story. For most (hand raised) we sip our coffee and just shake our head that a newlywed was mowed down during her honeymoon or the elderly are easy prey for robbers. We whisper, “what has the world come too” and go about our day.

Rapper Nas did more than that when he heard Stanley Young, single father of eight kids living in D.C., became homeless after his house was burned down. Motivated by Young’s tragic tale Nas launched an online campaign to raise money for the family that is currently living in a hotel. Pleading with the public to lend a hand to help out.

I am also a single father, and we don’t get enough credit in this country. I’m committed to helping Stanley and his eight (yes 8!) kids. Moreover, I believe and hope that we should all, as a community, come together to help our fellow American men and women when they need us in desperate situations like this. See if you can’t find a few dollars to help the Youngs get back on their feet with me. We need to raise enough to extend their stay, and maybe even afford a down payment on a new house or something.

So far,  $51,837.76 has been donated on fundraising site CrowdTilt. Check the video below of Stanley Young’s story. Beware video may cause uncontrollable weeping, have a Kleenex handy.

Don’tcha just love these Cinderella stories? Nas makes one helluva a fairy godfather and he is in good company. I remember Tyler Perry shared his inspiring story of giving to his Facebook fans six years ago.

Don’t put away your wallets just yet. Nas tweeted he wants The Help Stanley Young campaign flowing.

Russell Simmons’ 14th Annual Art for Life Gala

Russell Simmons brought out a bevy of stars on Saturday for his annual Art for Life Gala that raised $1.5 million for arts education, which has been sorely lacking in our schools these days, geared towards at risk youth. Russell works with his brothers: Rev Run and Danny Simmons, an artist in his own right, (check him out)  to develop opportunities for young ones to  showcase their artwork in galleries around Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as in public schools. RUSH Philanthropic Foundation boasts that it caters to 2,500 kids annually with their programs.

Not to shabby, Mr. Simmons, so it’s only fitting that the event get a major upgrade. Mission Accomplished. To cater to a larger guest list. The Art for Life Gala was held in a Field of Dreams. Well, actually, Fairview Farms in Bridgehampton, but you guys know what I mean.

Anyhoo, the stars were shining extra bright to raise awareness for the arts.

A lucky friend of mine who attended the gala, actually hijacked Estelle’s performance. Good thing Estelle likes to share the stage with an American boy.
