
Tyler Perry donated nearly $1.4 million to seven Atlanta based orgs that help feed those battling food shortages.
According to People, the organizations include Atlanta Community Food Bank, Meals on Wheels Atlanta, Caring for Others, All for Lunch, Ron Clark Academy, Goodr and LA-based charity Baby2Baby.
“If you’ve never been poor then you may not fully understand the life changing impact SNAP benefits mean to hard-working people, to our seniors and to our children,” Tyler Perry told People in a statement. “For millions of people, it could mean extreme hunger. For newborns, it could mean a lack of access to formula.”
For those living under a rock, S.N.A.P (Supplement, Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits–a government based program that helps feed low income people that face food shortages–funding has been cut starting Nov 1st, due to the government shutdown.
Approximately 42 million people are without a safety net to feed their families and need to depend on local food banks for support.
Tyler Perry, who might as well go by Atl’s godfather of giving (believe us, we got the receipts) urged us to return to our humanity.
“Compassion is not political, it’s humanity and we seem to be missing both right now,” the billionaire filmmaker preached.
Can’t say that he’s wrong when the highest court in the land co-opts President Trump’s stance of pausing SNAP benefits for millions that need it.
As dark as things may be, we can all be the light for others by following Tyler’s lead.
