Well, Blinkers when Fat Joe asked us many a moon ago what we wanted and told us he got what we needed, never did I imagine it would be eggs, bread and milk.
Fat Joe delivered just that when launching his free monthly grocery distribution program in UPNYC store in Washington Heights on June 20th.
The aim is to help NYC families struggling to put food on the table by providing free groceries in Manhattan and the Bronx once a month.
“People are really hurting right now in many, many ways,” Fat Joe said during the launch event. “People don’t know whether to pay the light bill or feed the family.”
He’s not lying. The only thing going all the way up is grocery store items and gas prices.
And NYC is getting hit the worse; Black Enterprise reports that 1.4 million city residents are facing food insecurity. They either don’t have access to a grocery store or food prices are so costly they go without the staples.
Fat Joe is partnering with the Shawn Carter Foundation and Food Bank for New York to support the initiative.
Jay Z’s mom, Gloria Carter who attended the launch said we need to get back to the ‘it takes a village’ mindset to solve the food insecurity crisis.
“I was raised on a block where we considered ourselves a village,” Carter said. “The neighbors looked out for you because you were family.”

Here is hoping we get back to that vibe.
The grocery distribution program scheduled its next free grocery giveaway on July 18th and August 15 at a UPNYC location.
Salute to Fat Joe for allowing the Boogie Down to lean on him for extra help.
