Usain Bolt had graduates of his alma mater, Waldensia Primary and Infant school in Jamaica on their feet with applause and cheers (btw, no track and field was included in this burst of enthusiasm.) for his donation of $1.7 million to their 2026 class.
According to Caribbean National Weekly, the donation was announced at the school leaving ceremony at Waldensia Baptist Church on Friday among the graduates, family, teachers and school officials.
School officials confirmed each graduate received a $100,000 donation check.
“Usain Bolt is celebrated not only as one of the greatest sprinters but for his remarkable benevolence and generosity,” a school official said during the ceremony.
The leap from eight-time Olympic gold medalist to hometown philanthropist is no doubt bridged by the sprinter’s mom, Jennifer Bolt, who attended the ceremony and confirmed her influence on securing the contribution.
Soon after the event, Usain wrote a motivational message to the graduates on his Facebook page.
“Congrats to all 17 students from Waldensia Primary School in my hometown of Sherwood on passing their PEP exams. Keep making your parents and community proud,”
It’s a life-changing graduation gift bankrolled by an Olympic icon. Congrats, graduates.
