Nick Cannon laced up his kicks and led the way for this year’s non-competitive 5K National Kidney Walk in NYC earlier this week. Cannon’s a huge supporter of the foundation after being hospitalized last year for kidney failure. The actor/rapper/DJ/comedian/TV host (whew!! that’s a lot of slashes) was diagnosed with lupus nephritis last year and wants to raise awareness for the cause.
“By participating in the Kidney Walk, we’re all helping to get the word out about screening and the importance of healthy lifestyle in preventing kidney disease,” said Cannon in a statement. “I had very unhealthy eating habits but I now know that eating low fat, low sodium and low sugar diets and keeping blood pressure and blood sugar under control can prevent kidney damage.”
Cannon greeted fans during the walk held at South Street Seaport, where an estimated 8,000 people participated.
The multitasking performer advised those at risk of the “silent killer” illness to hydrate, get rest and regulate diet. And most importantly, a good support system, as Mrs. Dr. Carey has given him.
“I call her Dr. Carey. She’s been there for me more than anyone, making sure I’m taken care of,” Cannon told NY Metro.
